Satisfy Your Curiosoi-Tea.
With the recent addition of acrylic and ceramic coasters to our range of promotional products, we have been thinking recently about how much we really do enjoy a good cuppa in the office to get us through Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and, well, you get where this is going!
Anyway, it got us thinking about tea. Brits and tea have always gone hand in hand, and after some inves-tea-gation, we have dug up some interesting facts about the nation’s favourite hot beverage that we thought we would share.
- According to the UK Tea Council, it was Catherine Bragnaza, a Portuguese princess and a tea addict, who was responsible for establishing tea as a fashionable beverage among the wealthy in Britain after her marriage to Charles II.
- During the late eighteenth century, there was an organised crime network for tea in order to make it more available to the publicwho could not afford its high price. Unfortunately for the tea drinkers, other leaves were often added to the tea to save on costs, and, to make the colour of the tea more convincing, sheep’s dung was often added as well! ‘Eee-ewe’, to say the least.
- The UK Tea Council highlights the fact that tea bags were actually an American invention in the early twentieth century. Sales didn’t take off in the UK until the 1970s, though I think we all agree that it is now impossible to imagine a life without them!
- Despite having originally come from China, Indian tea is the most drank tea in the world, and is India’s second largest industry next to to tourism.
- Tea leaves are a natural means of keeping mosquitoes away. All you have to do is use slightly damp leaves to add the scent of tea to the areas you want to keep insect-free.
- The Chinese and Taiwanese tea, Oolong, is the world’s most expensive tea. It is also called Dragon’s tea, as it represents a dragon when the leaves are added to a teapot. Why not have a nice cup of tea after an Oo-long day at work?
- The Ritz Carlton of Hong Kong is where the world’s most expensive afternoon tea is drunk you can spend up to $8,888 dollars there! You can taste the world’s best teas, finger food, fantastic cakes and enjoy the best view of the city.
We hope that has satisfied your curiosi-tea!
